Camp has been my life for a very long time (if you haven’t figured that out by now may I suggest some of my other campfire chats). And for the first time in 2020, I didn’t go. I opted not to find a different camp that was running in spite of covid. Instead, I stayed home that summer. I read some books, I got an inflatable pool, and I enjoyed sleeping in the air conditioning. But truly I was devastated. Really, I was lost. So I decided that no matter what in 2021, I was going back to camp in whatever form it takes.
Fast forward a little bit. Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey (who’s resident camp I worked for in subsequent summers) had made a few decisions. 1. Day camp will be running at 50% capacity. And 2. Resident camp will not run and will instead only run family camping. So I had a new decision to make. Do I find another resident camp or do I try day camp? Honestly it was a hard decision. Both had their pros and cons. I wrestled with it for a while. And then it was time to make a decision.
So I decided to switch it up a little. I’m returning to day camp for the first time since being in the town’s pool camp (I was probably 9 when I left that). I’m also starting in a new position. I’m get to be one of the assistant directors of The OVAL day camp!
Who knows what the future holds. Will I stay at day camp? Will I go back to resident? Will this be my last summer at camp? Surely, I don’t know. Take it one summer at a time.
So gear up. Get ready. I’m going back to day camp!
BONUS BONUS BONUS
A secret fact about this blog, I tend to pre-write posts in advance and then edit them. Well this was a pre-written post from some time ago. So I have some bonus camp news that I couldn’t figure out how to flow into my own writing from before. So here is my bonus news:
I am attending a second camp! WHATTT??? I know. Right after (and I mean less than 24 hours) The OVAL ends I am heading out to Pennsylvania to be a cabin counselor for Camp Highlight. This is a one week camp for children of LGBTQ+ families. I am really excited to go to a new camp (my first time at an all gender resident camp) and to be a cabin counselor. I’m still waiting to see what age group I’m going to be with. I am excited regardless.
